Simon Frick Solo
Despite the fact that he has a serious academic education in violin, Simon Frick is interested in many kinds of music, including experimental music, rock, free improvisations, etc. His discography also includes works in various formats, but this is the first time he has released a solo album.
Simon Frick Solo could be classed as new jazz avant-garde if many tracks did not have the clear undertones of indie rock and progressive metal. However, the album does not sound like a solo violin record, either. The numerous effects that Frick has added to his instrument create the impression of a little orchestra.
The album can be conditionally divided into two parts. The first part consists of arrangements of the compositions of famous bands, such as Nirvana ("Smells Like Teen Spirit"), System of a Down ("ATWA"), Guns N' Roses ("Don't Damn Me"), and Dream Theater ("In the Name of God"). The second — the larger of the two parts — is composed of originals. Here the sound of the violin fully comes to the forefront, at times even acquiring an unexpected oriental sound.
Simon Frick is certainly expanding the boundaries of what is possible with the violin and when he speaks about the limitless potential of this musical instrument, his music really confirms his words.
